2. Move during the off-season
Selecting the best time to move can save you lots of money. Off season is usually between August-April and the season starts during the month of May.
June and July are the busiest and most expensive times to move. Also the last week of the month is the most expensive time to hire a moving company, If you have the flexibility, talk to your Moving Company today and see if they can give you a great deal on your next move.
3. Ask the moving company or the truck rental company for a discount.
Most long distance moving companies charge fees based on a book called tariff 400, which is published by the American moving and storage association. Tariff 400 instructs moving companies on how much they can charge based on weight and distance. Most moving companies already discount the suggested prices by at least forty percent. So when are requesting a moving quote, ask how much they are discounting the move from the price listed in the Tariff 400.

Moving Quotes - Full Service Movers
There are two types of moving quotes or moving estimates that a moving company can provide:
Binding and NON-Binding, with two sub-types of Binding Estimates, The very best option of all moving quotes is the BINDING NOT-TO-EXCEED estimates. That means that if the actual weight of your shipment is more then the written moving estimate, you still pay the amount quoted but if the actual weight is less then the moving quote, you pay lesser amount. If you ask for a binding not to exceed moving quote, you'll never pay the moving company a higher price then what's on the moving estimate.
This rule comes from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Association (FMCSA) and must be observed by your moving company when preparing and implementing a binding estimate:
The binding estimate must accurately describe the shipment and all the services the company will provide. If you asked the moving company to provide additional services, such as long carry charges ( when the moving company has to carry your furniture from the truck or van to your residence more then the distance limit), shuttle service ( when the moving truck or van can not fit in your street or complex then you must pay for the rental fee and labor fees of the transfer of your goods from the big truck to a smaller truck) or flight charges, the moving company must bill you separately for these charges following your move.
The moving company must clearly state that the estimate is binding to you and your mover. Each binding estimate must also clearly state that the charges are only for services outlined in the estimate.
