How to Look for a Moving Company in New York

If you're planning a move to or from New York, it's important to understand how movers charge and what you are entitled to as a client. Whenever you look at the different prices provided by moving companies in New York, make sure to find out the additional costs for extra services. If you look around, you can often find another company that will perform the same service at a lower cost.

When looking at different moving companies in New York, keep in mind that federal law allows you to review each mover's published tariffs, which are used to determine your overall cost. Tariffs contain the rates, rules and other fees the mover charges clients. New York City movers cannot charge you rates that are higher than the ones listed on their tariffs. You can request a copy of your mover's tariffs or simply view them in their facilities.

Among other things, tariff provisions will typically establish the limitation of the carrier's liability, set the time frame for filing a claim and reserve the carrier's right to include additional charges when necessary.

Most New York movers try to get a client's belongings on one truck; however, sometimes the shipment must be divided between two or more trucks. If a mover gives you a price for moving all your things in one truck, the company must stand by its original price. If two trucks become necessary, you will be only be charged for the price of one truck.
